The term "Gul", meaning flower in Persian, refers to the stylized medallion motifs repeated throughout the rug. In the Mauri Gul variation, these motifs take on a distinct octagonal or diamond-like shape, arranged in symmetrical rows that create a sense of movement and harmony. This pattern is deeply tied to the Turkoman Mauri tribe, renowned for their fine weaving techniques and high-quality craftsmanship.
Originating in northern Afghanistan, particularly the Aqcha region near Mazar-e-Sharif, these rugs come from a hub of artisanal tradition. Aqcha is celebrated as a vital center of rug production and trade, located just south of the former Soviet state of Uzbekistan. The region is known for producing some of the most finely knotted and beautifully dyed rugs in the country.
Each Mauri Gul rug is handwoven from 100% pure wool, sheared from local sheep and spun by hand. The dyes used are natural and plant-based, creating a rich palette of deep reds, earthy browns, soft creams, and contrasting blacks—colors that not only reflect the region’s natural landscape but also mature gracefully with age.
Known for their durability, intricate patterns, and cultural depth, Afghan rugs with the Mauri Gul design make a stunning addition to both classic and contemporary interiors. Whether placed in a living room, hallway, or study, this rug carries a timeless story of artistry, heritage, and resilience woven into every thread.
